Spiritus Stories: Small Acts, Bigger Meaning
Learning Responsibility in the Heart of SeochoYangjae Library
Finding Purpose in Quiet Spaces
Volunteering at a local library might seem like a quiet and simple task. Yet sometimes, it is in these calm and silent places that we learn the most about care, patience, and community.
In early February, our Spiritus members spent several days volunteering at the SeochoYangjae Library in Seoul. Our duties were straightforward—organizing books, arranging shelves, tidying reading spaces, and assisting visitors when needed. Still, through these small acts, we came to see how even modest contributions can help a shared space remain warm, welcoming, and alive.

More Than Just Shelving Books
We began by returning books to their proper places, organizing shelves by genre and author, and checking for any misplaced titles. At first, it felt like simple, repetitive work. But as time went on, we realized how much attention and precision this job truly required.
The library was more than a room filled with books. It was a living space of discovery, curiosity, and rest. Keeping it clean and orderly meant helping others find what they were looking for—a story, an answer, or just a moment of peace. Whether it was a child searching for a picture book, a student preparing for exams, or an elderly visitor seeking a quiet corner, we felt proud to create an environment that supported them all.
Supporting Community in Small Ways
One of the most rewarding parts of our experience was helping younger visitors. Some children needed guidance finding the right shelf, while others asked for help using the search system. We guided them step by step, sometimes kneeling to their level, sometimes walking alongside them from shelf to shelf. It reminded us that helping others doesn’t always require grand gestures—sometimes, it’s simply about being patient and kind.
We also assisted with organizing reading materials for weekend programs, sorting through donated books, and arranging display sections for monthly themes. Each task deepened our appreciation for the quiet, unseen efforts that make community spaces thrive.

A Lesson in Awareness and Care
Through our time at the library, we learned to notice the small things. A misplaced book, a chair left askew, or a pencil forgotten on a desk might not seem significant at first, but together, they influence how comfortable and welcoming the space feels. Attention to these details became a lesson in mindfulness and respect.
Why It Matters
In a world that often rewards speed and noise, spending time in a quiet place reminded us of the value of slowness, focus, and consistency. The library became more than just a building full of books—it became a reflection of shared responsibility and quiet harmony.
If you ever have the chance, we encourage you to volunteer at your local library. You’ll not only learn how books are arranged, but also discover a deeper sense of order, respect, and calm purpose that stays with you long after you leave.
