Cleaning with Purpose in Sinsa-dong
Taking Initiative in the Heart of the City
Last weekend, our Spiritus team completed a two-hour cleanup in Sinsa-dong, one of Gangnam’s most vibrant and stylish neighborhoods. Although the streets appeared clean at first glance, we quickly discovered that much of the waste was hidden under benches, between sidewalk cracks, and along narrow alleyways.
Our goal was simple: to take action and show how small, consistent efforts can create visible change in our surroundings.
What We Did
Armed with tongs, gloves, and biodegradable trash bags, our group covered a three-kilometer route through side streets, public walkways, and local parks. As we moved, we noticed recurring patterns in the litter: cigarette butts, plastic packaging, and disposable drink containers—items often thrown away without thought, yet harmful to the environment over time.
One memorable moment came when a local resident stopped to thank us. They admitted they had never realized how much waste accumulated in their own neighborhood. That simple conversation reminded us that our efforts weren’t only about picking up trash. They were about raising awareness and reigniting community pride. By the end of the cleanup, we had collected over 60 pieces of trash, and more importantly, we had sparked curiosity and conversations with passersby and some even expressing interest in joining our next cleanup. Although the activity lasted only two hours, the sense of accomplishment and connection felt much larger.
Looking Ahead
This was not a one-time event. Spiritus is committed to turning these cleanups into a weekly initiative, expanding to new neighborhoods, collaborating with local residents, and continuing to build a culture of environmental care.
We believe that meaningful change doesn’t always come from grand gestures. It starts with simple, consistent acts of care. Through steady effort, open conversation, and a shared sense of responsibility, we can inspire others to take ownership of the spaces we all share and slowly create a more conscious, cleaner community from the ground up.
