Continuing to Build Bridges Through Words
After completing our first round of volunteer translation for the Gidae Writer program, our team decided to participate again. This time, the experience felt both familiar and more meaningful. We had already learned how to navigate the process of reading, understanding, and translating letters, but now we could focus more deeply on the emotions behind the words.
Each letter we opened felt like meeting an old friend. Some were written by sponsors who had been corresponding with the same child for years, their words filled with warmth and care. Others were from children excited to share stories about their daily lives, school events, or dreams for the future. Reading their words made us smile and feel connected, even though we had never met them in person.
Growing Beyond Translation
During our first experience, we focused mainly on being accurate. Every sentence had to make sense, every word had to match the original meaning. This time, we realized that translation is not only about words but also about feelings. We paid attention to tone, rhythm, and even the personality of each writer.
Sometimes we paused to think about how to best express a child’s excitement or a sponsor’s kindness. One letter said, “I hope one day I can help others just like you helped me.” Reading that line reminded us why this work matters. We were not simply typing; we were helping two people understand each other across different languages and lives.
Learning Together, Even from Afar
Although we worked separately online, it felt like we were together. We shared messages about word choices and phrasing, helping one another when something was unclear. “Does this sound too formal?” someone would ask, and another member would reply with a better idea. That teamwork made the process smoother and warmer.
We realized that even though we were not sitting in the same room, we were connected through a shared purpose. Every letter became a small mission we completed together, each translation a quiet piece of teamwork that built something larger than ourselves.
What We Take Away
By the end of our second Gidae Writer experience, we felt that we had grown not only as translators but as people. We became more patient, more careful, and more understanding of how powerful words can be. These letters may seem small, but they carry real emotion and hope across oceans.
Through this work, we learned that volunteering is not always about physical effort or large projects. Sometimes it means listening carefully, understanding another person’s feelings, and choosing the right words to carry them across distance.
Our team finished with gratitude and pride. Each translated letter felt like a small light reaching someone far away. Spiritus will continue to take part in activities that connect hearts, build empathy, and share kindness in ways that may seem quiet but truly matter.
