Spiritus: A Day Shared, A Heart Learned Together

Finding Connection and Warmth at Seongsu-dong Nursing Home

Volunteering at a nursing home might seem quiet and simple at first, but it’s often in these gentle moments that we discover the deepest meaning of empathy, presence, and human connection. Last weekend, the Spiritus team spent a heartfelt day at a nursing home in Seongsu-dong, sharing time, stories, and warmth with the elderly residents. This experience was quite different from our previous volunteer work at the library. Instead of organizing books and managing physical spaces, we focused on people—holding hands instead of shelving books, listening attentively to life stories instead of sorting items.

Walking into the nursing home, we were greeted by a calm and orderly atmosphere. Yet beneath this quiet exterior, we sensed lives moving slowly but richly, filled with memories, emotions, and untold stories. The building itself felt alive with the presence of each individual’s journey, reminding us that this was more than just a place—it was a home where human lives unfold every day.

Listening, Helping, and Meaningful Moments

Throughout the day, we engaged deeply with the residents. Some eagerly shared their youth’s vibrant memories, telling stories of days long past. Others spoke fondly of their children and families, while many preferred quiet companionship—simply having someone gently hold their hand, offering silent comfort. These moments highlighted how sometimes words aren’t necessary to convey care; a warm touch or attentive presence can say everything.

In addition to sharing stories, we helped those with limited mobility by offering our arms and support as we walked together, making their movements safer and more comfortable. After meals, we fetched items upon request, ensured that blankets covered those feeling chilly, and tidied common areas to create a more pleasant and welcoming environment. While these tasks might seem small, they had a meaningful impact on making each resident’s day easier and more comfortable. Through these simple acts, we felt a strong sense of purpose and connection.

One particularly touching moment stood out. A resident grasped my hand tightly and said, “Thank you for coming. I don’t remember the last time someone held my hand.” That simple, heartfelt sentence said so much. It was a powerful reminder that our presence wasn’t just about offering help; it was about affirming their existence and letting them know they mattered. A gentle touch can go far beyond physical comfort—it can be an emotional lifeline.

Reflecting on Community and Looking Ahead

This volunteer experience was much more than just giving time or effort. It taught us about bridging generational divides, offering not just aid but genuine empathy and connection. In a society like Korea, where the population is rapidly aging and many elderly people face increasing loneliness and isolation, the importance of living as a caring community becomes ever more urgent.

We realized that being part of this community means more than simply helping from the outside; it means standing alongside one another as fellow members of society. While our previous library volunteer work taught us the value of quiet care for things—the organization, order, and respect for shared spaces—this nursing home experience showed us the irreplaceable warmth of human touch, eye contact, and heartfelt presence. Though the forms of sharing differed, both experiences shared a fundamental truth: the power and necessity of truly living together.

Spiritus is committed to continuing these kinds of meaningful engagements. We aim to transform one-off activities into ongoing practices of care and connection, fostering a culture where even the smallest, sincerest actions can build stronger bonds within our community. We hope that our efforts leave lasting, warm memories for the elders and that society as a whole gradually grows more comfortable and familiar with the idea of living together—supporting, respecting, and caring for each other across generations.

With this hope in our hearts, we prepare for the next steps on this journey, ready to continue learning, sharing, and connecting.
