Cleaning with Purpose: A Small Step in Gangnam-gu

This past weekend, our team spent two meaningful hours cleaning up the vibrant streets of Gangnam—a neighborhood often praised for its stylish boutiques and energetic atmosphere. On the surface, the area looked clean. But as we walked, we quickly realized just how much hidden waste lay tucked away under benches, in sidewalk cracks, and along quiet alleyways.

Our mission was straightforward: to take direct action and demonstrate how small efforts can lead to visible change.

What We Did

Armed with gloves, tongs, and eco-friendly trash bags, we walked a one-kilometer route covering backstreets, walkways, and public parks. Along the way, certain types of litter appeared again and again—paper bags, plastic wrappers, and disposable drink containers. These small items, often easily discarded, have long-term effects on our environment.

A memorable moment came when a local resident paused to thank us. They admitted they’d never noticed how much waste had built up in their own neighborhood. That moment reminded us: this isn’t just about cleaning streets—it’s about sparking awareness and reigniting community pride.

By the end of the day, we had collected over 60 pieces of litter. But more importantly, we had started conversations. Several people asked how they could get involved. What began as a modest effort turned into something much more powerful.

What’s Next

This cleanup was just the beginning. We’re turning this into a weekly project—visiting new neighborhoods, building relationships with residents, and working toward cleaner, more mindful public spaces.

We believe that with consistency, community, and honest conversation, we can shift attitudes—encouraging more people to take responsibility for the spaces we all share. Together, step by step, we can cultivate a culture of care for our environment and for one another.
